Practical Tips For New Models - Doing Nude Photos

One of the most common questions I get from new models is: “Will nude photos hurt my career?” The short answer is NO, however there are a few But’s (pun intended).

Regardless of what some conservative people will tell you, there is not a segment of the modeling industry that I know of that will reject a good model because she has done nude photos. Nearly every top model has shot nude photos from Naomi Campbell to Christie Turlington to Claudia Schiffer. Ultimately a few good nude shots in your portfolio will show your level and diversity as a model.

Here are the But’s!

When it comes to nude photos, it is not the skin but the context in which it is displayed. If you shoot nudes make sure it is with a GOOD photographer that will do them well AND that you know where the images will be going and what they will be used for.

ALSO as a new model starting out, I would not recommend putting nude shots in your portfolio until you have a solid base representing other work first. If you put nudes up too soon you will find very quickly that the only offers you get will be to do nudes coming from every yahoo with a digital camera on the Internet. If you wait until your portfolio is already diverse it will scare off many of the skin hunters.

Finally, the act itself. To shoot nude photos you need to be REALLY comfortable with your body. If you are the slightest bit uncomfortable it will show in your face and body language making for a bad photo. So unless you are a nudist/exhibitionist at heart I suggest working your way up with implied nudes first or practice shooting nude with a photographer you trust to get the hang of it.

In the end it comes done to what you are comfortable with and where you are trying to go. You could base you entire career on nudes or never shoot in less than a turtle neck, it is up to you. But be realistic, don’t take portfolio for of naky you to apply for a clothing catalog shoot and don’t expect to make it big in glamor if your not willing to show a little skin.
